A manifesto for Mary

Mary PortasAs Mary Portas heads back onto our screens and into the High Street, we thought it would be a good time for us to let the world know some of our ideas for generating life back into our town and City centres. Why are we concerned? As a leading POS manufacturer  many of our clients will only succeed and grow if shoppers return to the High Street and, as consumers, we know that a vibrant High Street is essential to the well being of communities. So here are our ideas for the High Street
1.      Pop-up shops
Customers need a reason to visit the High Street and pop-up shops are the ideal way to attract visitors. There are many empty shops, market stalls and other spaces that can be filled on a temporary basis by a whole host of retailers: those that run e-commerce stores, designers needing a shop-front for their ranges and existing shops that don’t currently operate in the town. With some good publicity, strong concepts and some excellent Point of Sale display pop-up shops will be a big boost to any High Street.
2.      Events
Following on from the above, events and themed shopping activities will give a reason for shoppers to visit on a particular day, weekend or week. Many High Streets have already seen the number of visitors that Farmers Markets can bring to a town centre, but these are not sufficient. There are many other opportunities, and not all have to be food or retail related; town centres can work with local arts groups to create street-based theatre, pop-up galleries for local artists, free outdoor film projections, etc, etc.
3.      Subsidised Rates and Rents
Local Authorities can play a large part in encouraging younger business into the High Street through subsidised rates; any short term loss will be made up once an area becomes established as a thriving centre for individual shops. Councils can create zones for younger businesses and entrepreneurs. Businesses will continue to set up as e-commerce sites without such help. Commercial landlords also need to look at encouraging new start-ups through reduced rents – or even rent free periods to help the businesses become established. Again, commercial landlords will be one of the long-term beneficiaries when these shops bring customers back to the area.
4.      Reduce car parking
One of the advantages of out-of-town centres is the amount of parking and the fact that it is mostly free. Local authorities have actively tried to discourage traffic in City centres – sometimes for sound environmental reasons – through massive hikes in parking costs and the areas where the charges apply. However, using trains and buses actually reduces the amount people spend as they are restricted on the amount they can carry back on public transport. Why not try a ‘free parking’ day to give people a chance to get the taste of High Street shopping again.
If all the stakeholders work together and show some imagination and flexibility, there is every reason to be positive about the future of the High Street.
